Science In Your Backyard

Your backyard is a great place for your child to get outside and play.  Physical activities like riding a bike are wonderful, but your child can also use your backyard for science projects. If you are interested in helping them achieve this, you may want to familiarize yourself with some popular backyard activities, especially those that have a focus on nature and science.

Outdoor exploration is not simply a lot of fun, it also offers you a chance to try some science projects. There are a surprisingly large number of different plants and living creatures that can be found in your yard or near your home, even in an urban environment. Nurture your child’s curiosity about the world, and they will love exploring their environment. This is especially true for kids in pre-school and elementary school. Your kids may need your help, so pick things you are also interested in.

One of the many ways that you can incorporate science is by studying the plants that can be found in your backyard and neighborhood. If you look closely, most backyards have many different kinds of plants and flowers. Although many animals and insects live in your lawn, don’t neglect the other, uncut areas of your yard.

Your yard and neighborhood provide many habitats for birds and animals. Try to identify as many different kinds as you can. This is a good time for your child to practice patience as they wait and watch quietly. What do they eat? Can you see where they live? Bird watching is a popular hobby, and even amateur bird watchers often contribute to real science projects. Don’t be surprised if you child decides they would like a new pet bird.

Your backyard is also likely to be full of many different insects. Children may find observing bugs even more interesting than studying the plants and flowers. It is both fun and educational to study the types of insects that are in your yard.

Encourage your child to study the impact of the weather on the environment for the plants and animals in your yard. Backyard conditions change as the weather changes. Study your backyard after a heavy rain, and have your child look for all the changes they can find. Examining the effect the weather has on the things in your backyard is not only fun, but educational.

Providing your child with some basic scientific supplies can reinforce their learning experience. Consider purchasing science and nature books, butterfly nets, magnifying glasses, containers or insect cages, and so on. If your child is planning on capturing a few insects, a small cage or breathable container may be just what they need. Many of the supplies you need can be bought at local toy, department or home improvement stores. Or search online to find what you need.

Nature and science books may be a good addition to your child’s library, as resources they can turn to again and again. Many books and guides have a specific focus on insects, birds, plants, or flowers. Use the pictures and information in the books to identify the plant and animal species you find. For a large selection of science and nature books, you are encouraged to shop online or visit your local book store.

When examining the plants, bugs, and flowers in your backyard, you and your child may want to document what you see You can easily do this with a camera or a notebook. Have your child record their exploration and findings by taking pictures. Those pictures could also be used for other crafts. You can turn the photos into memories by using them in a scrapbook or collage project.

It doesn’t matter whether the backyard exploration in planned or spontaneous, your child is sure to find something interesting. Backyard science provides a unique opportunity for adventure and sharing nature. And who knows, it could even lead to a career in science.
