Coaching kids about soccer is no rocket science but yes, it requires skill, knowledge, and a lot of patience. Every coach is aware of the strategies that tag along to teach youth soccer. Consistent application of these tricks will help you build up a great team.
Promote learning: We all know about it but what do we do to promote it effectively? Allow the players to do activities that they like and even if they get wrong, take it easy. This way, you’ll not only allow the kids to enjoy themselves but also help them get imaginative.
Name the teams: Divide the groups into small teams which allow you to better coordinate the affairs. Also it is a great idea to give names to the teams as this inculcates a sense of association.
Evaluate failures and success: Define the standards against which the performance would be measured to coach youth soccer. For instance, the fact that kids like the practice sessions can be taken as a benchmark. Make out if they really enjoy the game or play considering it as just another task. Are the kids finding it easy to grasp the tricks of dribbling, managing the ball, and controlling it?
Give rewards: Rewards encourage the new as well as skilled players in the same way. However, the rewards don’t need to be huge. For example, the team that wins gets a half hour rest or gets to go half-hour early and so on. Also, stay away from rewarding individual acts. They do not work in soccer as some kids will always excel whereas others won’t. Substitute it with rewarding team’s hard work.
Managing poor performance: It’s important in teaching soccer to carefully manage individual’s poor performance affecting the entire team. For instance: a player not making it to the drills in time should not be ignored. Punish the culprit with a light punishment so that everyone gets a message.
Similar is the case with parents, some of which may try to interfere a lot in the affairs of the team. Do not allow that and set the record straight. You are the coach and you will take decisions. But, involvement of parents to a certain level is also important.
Be a leader: Whatever you do is likely to be imitated by your players because a coach is always looked upon as a mentor. So you better mend your ways. Be good and courteous to your colleagues, opposite team, and fellow team members. Make it to the practice ground earlier than the players. Do not disapprove of the players or the referee anytime during the practice matches.
